Information

This is the third episode in the life of a suburban home in the south of Athens. In 1953, the grandfather of the current owner built a ground-floor house with three rooms to house his new family, with future plans for extending it. In 1965, and as the family had grew, he managed to extend it upwards, adding a staircase in the back, an extra floor and a terrace laundry room, with a concrete slab on top. The house was a typical free-standing 1960s building, with a concrete pergola marking the horizontal axis of the façade and a tilted concrete column supporting the first floor balcony. The house passed to the next generation and housed the family of his daughter; now it belongs to the granddaughter. Her decision to extend the house was based on a new extended-family living scenario, where the ground floor would be the home of her parents, and her new family would live in the top two floors.

Similarly, as in the first extension, a new floor was added on top of the existing structure, but in this case, a lift was also installed, together with new bathroom and storage spaces. As this is the final addition to this house, a new roof was designed, in order to mark the vertical ending of the building in a context where the majority of the surrounding structure are much taller than it. The extension mainly consists of an open kitchen and a spacious living room, which open to a side terrace, covered with a pergola. The main aim was to flood these spaces with natural light and enhance the continuity of enclosed and open spaces.
