Information

The ‘Creation of a Tanning Museum for the Municipality of Karlovassi’ in the Tambakika area at Karlovassi on Samos  island is proposed in an area which has retained its industrial character. The new museum will be housed in the existing building (formerly the Talambekos – Synadinos tannery) with the addition of an entrance – reception building and a ‘Business Briefing Counter’.
The new building recedes in the rear part of the open-air site so as to leave a courtyard as an outdoor exhibition area. It remains low in height, so as not to obtrude on the ‘summit ridge’ of the location. The existing building will serve as the basic exhibition area of the museum, retaining its form and the unified character of its interior.
The existing building and the features of the process of production will be restored. A small projecting roof denotes the presence of the new museum. Its form and its support on a single longitudinal beam lend lightness and help it to communicate with the open-air areas of the exhibition and the refreshment canteen which are on either side of it. The form and materials of the new building (bare stone masonry, columns, beams of bare concrete) make reference to the old building, but render its modern construction always distinct.
